Bonfire night celebrations abound this weekend – our top tip? Head to Battersea Park, if you’re south of the river; if north, it’s got to be Alexandra Palace. What else should you be doing with your weekend? Well, the Hayward is hosting a fifty year retrospective of American painter Ed Ruscha, food-wise, there’s Pizza East, Nick Jones’ latest venture in Shoreditch, and if you can’t eat pizza without feeling guilty, head to the ice-skating rink at the Natural History Museum which is officially open this weekend.

ART

Ed Ruscha: Fifty Years of Painting @ Hayward Gallery
Belvedere Rd, London, SE1 8TL; 020 7960 4200
This exhibition features 78 paintings spanning the past five decades of Ed Ruscha’s long career. Although seemingly difficult to categorise – he’s been pigeon-holed as pop-art, minimalist, photo-realism amongst other genres, Ruscha’s paintings have a distinctive wit about them; the depiction of serene, natural landscapes emblazoned with incongruous words and phrases leads to an end result which is wry, playful and provocative. On until 10 Jan 2010. more

FOOD
Pizza East @ under Shoreditch House
56 Shoreditch High St, E1 6JJ; +44 (0)20 7729 1888
Another hip venture from the Nick Jones’ empire has launched in the heart of Shoreditch. Housed in the old T bar, the bare concrete pillars and exposed brick walls lend an airy industrial feel to the space; intimate this is not. But when full, there’s a buzzy atmosphere to the place and it’s the perfect launch pad for a night out. As for the food, pizza is obviously the main feature and is very good by all reports. Go for the simple portobello mushroom pizza, or if you’re feeling rather more adventurous, try the duck sausage pizza with shaved artichokes. more
